Landscape Transformation: Water Wonderland

An expansive, wooded suburban lot was turned into a watery wonderland by a couple who spent years touring ponds and planning their backyard oasis. They wanted their water garden to possess a magical quality that would entice visitors to linger and explore every twist and turn of the streams and waterfalls.

Mulched pathways and stepping stones invite you to explore every nook and cranny, delighting in all the flora (and fauna) of this wooded paradise. A fire pit is located to the right with ample seating.

This before photo shows the boring expanse that was begging for beauty with a complete makeover. For the pond installer, this was a blank canvas awaiting his handiwork.

The multi-window addition to the house was built specifically to take in the sights and sounds of the expansive water garden waiting just outside.

This is truly a "room with a view." It just doesn't get any better than this!

A stunning variety of perennials and annuals dot the shores and yes, even the surface, of this water garden. The woods provide a soft backdrop and beckon you to head up the stone stairway to explore even more.

Stepping stones invite you to cross the water, play with the fish, and maybe even dangle your feet in the clean, cool water.

The first buds of waterlilies peek up above the pond's surface while ferns and more soften the cool edges of the waterfall rocks.

A fallen log from the property is repurposed to lend an artistic, architectural element to the rippling stream.

A variety of aquatic and terrestial plants stand at attention while the gentle stream courses its way through the maze of rocks.

A clever use of Morning Glories shows they can do more than simply ramble up a white picket fence.

Meanwhile, bubbling fountain rocks greet visitors at the front door, lending just a hint of what's in store as the journey continues to the backyard.

Birds and butterflies will flock to this life-giving fountain. The cool, dark rock creates drama amidst all the soft greens and earthy browns. Every inch of the woodsy, watery property is a delight for the senses. And now, after years of attending pond tours, this lucky couple find that their homestead is now the star attraction of many a pond tour.

  1. That is an amazing job! My yard isn't nearly big enough to support something like that, but needless to say, I'm jealous.

  2. I think my favorite part are the stepping stones allowing you to get up close and personal with the fish. Would have liked to see how those were installed. :) Just fantastic water garden. Thanks for sharing.
